The benefits of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) such as Alley Flats include neighborhood stabilization, sprawl mitigation, green building, improved alley infrastructure, increased social capital, and supplemental Income for homeowners. Unfortunately, the potential benefits of Alley Flats have not yet been fully realized in Austin: city statistics show that on average only 30 ADUs are constructed each year. There are many financial, regulatory and political barriers that make developing these types of units difficult for homeowners and community organizations without assistance.
